Hot Head Heater hits the The Tulsa Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Weather conditions for December's Tulsa Shootout will be typical so prepare for the worse weather but the best racing ever
The Tulsa Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma you know is the largest event for Midget race cars in the world. With numbers of entries growing every year, Covid 19 has not phased the impressive car count surpassing 300 entries. Held in the QuickTrip expo center, agreeably a spectacle itself, it is the largest unsupported building in the northern hemisphere.
Go prepared for your indoor winter racing program
This year's temperatures historically range around freezing as shown during early January (right). To the point, methanol fed engines run crappy until a few laps into a race. Minor stumbling will certainly send you back a few spots. There are ineffective strategies used to build and manage essential engine heat without a engine heater. Any attempt (to heat by starting) will include a long push to the back of the building, then outside into the elements. We’ve seen the painful efforts, that is, suiting up and finding a willing push truck then jamming around the icy parking lot in the rain or possibly snow in the dark. Entertaining to watch but not to do…
Regardless, once you get way back to the staging area with what little heat was generated, it is lost before you head down the ramp, onto the track. Helpful tips might include covering the radiator and engine, fighting to reduce the losing battle of heat loss… This is not how you want to start the week, you want to be looking at that gage reading over 180° feeling the heat through the firewall, ready to make those passes on stumbling traffic!
You want to get that needle to move using the most popular engine heater in the building.
Hot Products Engineering makes them, the Hot Head Competition Engine Heater is used by the most successful racers. You can find what you need at https://www.hotheadheater.com.
Having raced the Chili Bowl about 8 times makes me a bit of a (weather) expert here.
My first advice is to remind you to protect your engine heater (and race engine) from freezing in the trailer in route, secondly, make time to watch the best racing bar none and finally, from my 2010 experience, I’ll let you know that there is a warm Indian owned casino where you can stay for a week waiting for the airports to re-open! The weather sucks but the experience and racing is amazing!
